What is a favicon? And should I even care?

Your favicon matters.

So the short answer is a resounding YES!
Favicons are more important than you think. They might be small but they are very impactful, and they get everywhere. But first things first, what exactly IS a favicon?

This is a favicon

“A favicon (short for favorite icon), also known as a shortcut icon, website icon, tab icon, URL icon, or bookmark icon, is a file containing one or more small icons, associated with a particular website or web page.”
Wikipedia

Usually when you browse the internet and bookmark a page, you'll see a small logo icon attached to the website link. That's the favicon.

What happens when you DON'T manage your favicons.

Let's show you what happens if you let the internet determine your favicon rather than doing it yourself.

An example where no favicon is set - a close up of a hand holding a smartphone showing lots of favicon icons.

The internet will pick up any graphic that it can find on your homepage. Sometimes it's the default logo in odd sizes, or in this case a screen grab of the entire page. The logo simply can't be seen clearly. This can be harmful to your brand as it is confusing and distracting. There is nothing legible enough to grab the attention. This means that your potential visitor is likely to ignore the link altogether and move on.

Now let's show you what the above icon would look like if you set your own favicon.

Example of a proper favicon showing

That's so much better. The logo is clear, legible and the branding will be consistent across the board. Your potential visitor is much more likely to register awareness of your logo. This in turns reinforces and encourages brand awareness.

Help me determine my favicons!

Lucky for you there are quite a few websites which will help you do this. You need access to your own logo, and you may need the logo in a few different formats so that it can be read successfully across all tablets and operating systems. It can take a little trial and error but stick with it and you'll be well rewarded.

Our favourite Favicon generator is here:
https://realfavicongenerator.net/

When you go to that website, along the menu bar you'll find 'Favicon', click down to 'Favicon checker'. You can then pop in your own website url and it will show you what favicons are currently being used.

If you have some errors here, then go back to the menu and choose 'Favicon Generator'. Here you can select your own favicons. Start with your standard logo as a jpg and follow the instructions.

Once you have your favicons showing correctly on the page and you are happy, you will be asked to do 2 things:

1. Download the package that's generated and upload it to your hosting space.
2. Copy the code into your website.

Once you've completed the setup then you may need to make new bookmarks if you want the updated favicons to show up on your own desktops, but that's pretty much it.

Good luck creating your new favicons, feel free to ask questions on our Storm Facebook page, but if all fails and you want us to take care of it for you, we can do that too. https://www.facebook.com/StormDesignPrint/
